Plastic coatings
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments to coat plastics.
Metallic coating effects play an important part in the styling of consumer electronics, e.g. TV casings, HiFi equipment, cameras, computer consoles, mobile phones etc. Mostly, the substrate is plastic, which needs to be taken into consideration when the coating is formulated, keeping in mind adhesive qualities, forced drying, dissolving properties of the solvents, etc.
The required film properties such as tape adhesion, chemical resistance, resistance to detergents, solvents, etc.) make tough demands on the metallic pigments. In critical formulations, pigments with an organic or inorganic coating can act as “problem solvers”. In water-based systems, it is essential to use inhibited pigments.
Automotive Coatings (OEM)
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments to the automotive industry.
For many years now, metallic effects have been popular with cars. Pure silver colors or those containing a mixture of aluminium pigments with transparent colored pigments or other effect pigments are important styling features in the automobile industry.
The colors and effect consistency demanded by the automobile industry require a great deal of production reliability, quality assurance and extensive quality control. Both systems that contain solvents and, increasingly, water-based coatings are used.
The SCHLENK Zenexo® series for example provides outstanding coloristic features, such as hiding power, color intensity, flop and gloss.
Coil Coating
SCHLENK offers a wide range of effect pigments for the coil coating industry. This includes our products such as SilverCoil®, MirrorCoil® and Zenexo®.
The coil-coating process is used for indoor and outdoor wall elements as well as for flat components, e.g. kitchen appliances, blinds, etc. Due to the special properties of this composite material, particularly its high resistance to corrosion, good formability and decorative appearance, it is used in many industries.
In addition to “classic coil coatings”, SCHLENK also supplies special VMPs for creating high gloss coatings similar to chrome or stainless steel. High transfer efficiency, as well as solvent energy capture and recycling make coil coating one of the most environment-friendly coating technologies.
Cosmetics industry
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments to the cosmetics industry.
The cosmetic industry provides support for those who wish to look good. This support includes products in categories such as skin care, decorative cosmetics, hair care and fragrances as well as general cosmetic items for dental and body hygiene.

Flexible packaging

Printed plastic substrates are not only used for food packaging (see food packaging), but also in the “non-food” area as outer packaging, as carrier bags, shrink wrap (including “shrink sleeves”) etc. For food packaging, compliance with the relevant regulations with respect to migration properties (no risk) is required.
Gravure and flexo printing with solvent-based or UV curable inks are the most frequently used processes. The emergence of so-called “convenience food” has brought about new boom in this segment.
Food packaging

For food packaging, the applicable legal provisions must be observed.
If there is a risk that components of the printing ink could be transferred into the food either by direct contact or migration, the printing inks and/or the components of their formulations must be low odor and completely safe with regard to migration. SCHLENK is happy to assist in the selection of suitable metallic pigments and provide special pigments and customized solutions for food packaging printing ink formulations.
Interior (Automotive) Plastic Coatings
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments such as aluminium pigments, gold bronze pigments, vacuum metallized pigments & polychromatic pigments to the automotive industry.
Metallic effect coatings are also applied in the interiors of vehicles: Decorative molding, instrument panels, brand emblems, radio housings and much more. In many cases, in order to achieve high gloss effects similar to high quality chrome or stainless steel, VMPs (vacuum metallized pigments) in the Decomet®, MultiFlect® and Zenexo® series are used.
Label Printing
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments & press ready inks to print labels.
For example in the beverage industry, designing labels with special effects represents a significant marketing instrument for supporting sales and creating brands.
Today, metallic effects can be printed on a whole range of substrates used for labels, from the traditional papers to a variety of plastics. Flexo printing (narrow web) is used most often for this application. For large print runs, gravure printing is also used. Decomet® can be used to achieve metallic effects of particularly high quality. These vacuum metallized pigments (VMP) can print mirror effects in targeted areas of the label design. In this way, these pigments offer advantages not possible with the competing effect technologies of metallization and embossed foils.
Offset printing
SCHLENK supplies press ready inks & effect pigments for various printing processes.
Offset printing is one of the most frequently used printing processes. In both sheet fed and web offset printing, high quality metallic effect inks (for gold and silver effects and metallic appearance) can be used to enhance packaging materials, advertising graphics, catalogs, posters, etc.
The process requires extremely small particle sizes in the range of 2-6 µm (gold bronze) or 6-10 µm (aluminium pigment) and the following rule applies: the coarser the pigment, the greater the metallic brilliance, and the finer the pigment, the higher the printability, especially at high speeds. SCHLENK offers pigments and press ready printing inks for processes that range from classic, oil-based offset printing to UV curable systems.
Plastics industry
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments to the plastics industry, e.g. aluminium pigments, gold bronze pigments, vacuum metallized pigments & polychromatic pigments.
The applications of metal powders and metal pigments in plastics are quite diverse. First, metal pigments are used to create effects, such as in the form of a master batch for coloring plastics, or in relief technique to create an artistic imitation of metal.
Second, the material properties of the metals are used in functional plastics, such as electrical conductivity in anti-static plastic material (e.g. flooring) or heat conductivity and high density in PTFE compounds for friction and sliding surfaces.
Powder coatings

Because there are absolutely no solvents and the overspray can be reused, powder coatings are one of the most environment-friendly coating systems. Metallic effects (aluminium and gold bronze pigments) are used in the coating of tubular steel furniture, automobile parts (e.g. wheel rims), kitchen appliances, tools etc.
The appropriate coating of pigment particles makes them suitable for exterior applications (e.g. façade elements).
Rim coatings
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments such as aluminium pigments, vacuum metallized pigments & polychromatic pigments to the automotive industry.
For the most part, silver metal effects are applied to rims. If they are wet coated, in addition to the usual aluminium pigments, VMPs can also be used to create high gloss chrome effects. However, many rims are also coated with a powder coating process. A wide selection of products from the POWDAL™ series, such as MultiFlect® and Decomet® are available for this purpose.
Textile printing
SCHLENK supplies effect pigments to print textiles, e.g. aluminium pigments, gold bronze pigments & vacuum metallized pigments.
Textile printing with the use of metal pigments is strongly influenced by fashion trends. In direct printing, the motifs are screen printed (e.g. T-shirts) or rotary screen printing is used (roll material). With transfer printing, the motifs are printed onto suitable substrates using gravure or flexo printing and then transferred to the textile material by ironing, for example.
Depending on the desired effect, coarse pigments (for high metallic brilliance) or fine pigments (for good coverage) or combinations of pigments are used. For applications that demand higher resistance and/or more authentic appearance, special coated pigments are available for both silver and gold effects.
Wallpaper printing

Depending on the desired style, design and fashion trends, metallic effects can be used to significantly enhance the attractiveness of wallpaper. The most frequently used process is gravure printing.
Both coarser pigments (for greater brilliance) and innovative effect pigments can be used in rotary screen printing. In addition to the optical effects, important performance criteria for metallic pigments include wear and smudge resistance and general resistance to light, water and atmospheric degradation.
Wood coatings

Metal pigments are also used in wood coatings for functional protection of the wood from the effects of UV and IR radiation as well as the weather and for creating effects, e.g. to emphasize the wood grain.
